SS Bremen: Germany’s Fugitive Ocean Liner

After the devastation of World War One, Germany’s SS Bremen (1928) and SS Europa (1928) reignited Europe’s stalled race to build the greatest transatlantic ocean liner. The two ships were ultra-modern and fast, both capturing the Blue Riband for Germany. But as the Nazi party rose to power, the Bremen’s popularity waned and she would be forced to make a covert dash for Germany at the outset of World War Two only the be destroyed by fire a few months later. The Italian Line's SS Michelangelo (1965) and SS Raffaello (1965) entered service long after passengers began to abandon ocean liners for air travel. Their careers lasted less than a decade and were marked by engine room fires and rogue waves but they were a beautiful example of the final days of the ocean liner. RMS Queen Elizabeth: Cunard's Forgotten Queen

Running mate to the more famous Queen Mary, the RMS Queen Elizabeth, launched in 1938, was the largest passenger ship in the world until she met her fiery demise in Victoria Harbor in 1972. Her career as a passenger liner was delayed when World War 2 broke out and a top-secret plot hatched by Winston Churchill saved her from Luftwaffe bombs. She was instrumental in carrying troops and supplies from North America to the war in Europe. After the war, along with the Queen Mary, she was a favorite for crossing the Atlantic, carrying over 2 million passengers over the course of her long and iconic career.Help support this channel with some ship shape merch! https://www.bigoldboats.com/shopInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/bigoldboatsSources:The Only Way to Cross - John Maxtone-Graham: https://amzn.to/3lLVFjAPicture History of the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth - William H. The Sinking of White Star Line’s RMS Republic

The White Star Line's RMS Republic, launched on February 26th, 1903, sank after she collided with the SS Florida in a fog bank off Nantucket on January 24th, 1909. The disaster was the first time Marconi wireless was used to transmit a distress signal. The rescue was a major success, with only 6 people dying in the initial collision. With hardly any casualties, the Republic taught the shipping industry that modern ocean liners were virtually immune to major disasters. This confidence would ultimately prove deadly for RMS Titanic only 3 years later. On November 9th, 1913, SS Henry B. Smith left Marquette, Michigan as a blizzard ravaged Lake Superior. She would go on to be one of 19 ships lost in the Great Lakes Storm of 1913, also commonly called the White Hurricane. The decision to leave port that day and what happened in her final moments has baffled researchers for decades. In 2013, her long-lost wreck was finally discovered only a few miles from where she began her voyage, shedding some light on the tragedy that claimed the lives of 25 sailors. The SS Île de France launched on March 14th, 1926 was one of the most successful ocean liners to ever sail the Atlantic. Her luxury and glamour kept her popular even through the depths of the Great Depression. Over the course of her over 30-year career she hosted numerous celebrities, played a critical role in World War 2, rescued 753 passengers from the sinking Andrea Doria, and starred in a cheesy action film called the last voyage. She was truly one of a kind. But when the Netherlands fell to German occupation in World War 2, she was converted into a troopship for the allied war effort. She was also one of the first liners designed to serve as a cruise ship in the winter. While she wasn't a major commercial success during her short career, she earned a small but loyal following who loved her spaciousness and beauty. But World War 2 brought the great liner a premature end, making her the largest ship ever sunk by a German u-boat.If you'd like to help this channel grow, you can make a donation here: https://www.bigoldboats.com/donateor here:https://ko-fi.com/bigoldboatsInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/bigo....ldboatsSources:Empre of Britain: Canadian Pacific's Greatest Ship by Gordon Turner: https://amzn.to/3iwRS8MWhite Empresses and Other Canadian Pacific Liners of the 1920s & 30s by William Miller: https://amzn.to/3L66OHbThe Floating Inferno: The Story of the Loss of the Empress of Britain by R.J.
