This Program was presented on March 10, 2022 by Jeff Thomas to the Association of Lifelong Learners at ACC in Alpena, MI.This presentation about ships that were lost with all hands and the wrecks that have yet to be found in the Great Lakes. As a local history teacher and part time Great Lakes sailor Jeff Thomas draws on both experiences to tell the stories of Great Lakes shipwrecks. He finds the small details that bring the stories to life in a story-telling experience that puts the viewer "in the moment" of these dramatic tales.

Following the 2021 shipping season on the Great Lakes, I wanted to make another compilation showing the highlights from the videos I captured in the Duluth, Superior, and Two Harbors area. This video is the result of those efforts. The footage selected here is meant to represent the widest variety of lake carriers seen in a range of conditions... day and night, summer and winter, calm and stormy. For each ship, I included data on the date it was launched, it overall length, the cargo carrying capacity, the type of engines, and the overall horsepower of all engines combined. All stats were obtained from the annual Know Your Ships book, published annually.Since this video is over 107 minutes in length, I realize not everyone will want to sit through it all... at least not in one sitting. I have indexed the ships, so you can pick out your favorites using the time stamps below. Or you can select chapters using the time progress bar within the video. This video contains condensed edits of each ship arrival or departure, generally averaging two minutes for each ship. If you want to see the longer version of each arrival or departure, click the link next to each ship name.0:00 Arthur M. 40 Ships in Action: Steel Giants of the Great Lakes

Here is a look back at some of the highlights of the 2020 Great Lakes shipping season that I recorded during my 22 visits to Duluth that year. A total of 40 different lake carriers are shown here. If you're new to this channel, lake carriers are ships that travel between ports on the Great Lakes carrying a variety of cargoes including iron ore, coal, limestone, salt, grain, and cement. For this video, I first considered just putting together a compilation of the best ship salutes for 2020. But that would have been missing out on so many of my favorite moments from the season. Instead this compilation is something of a highlight reel, including at least one clip from each lake carrier that I captured on camera... with an emphasis on showing a variety of views in the Duluth, Superior, and Two Harbors area. A few of my favorite ships appear twice, which we'll call editor's privilege! I didn't include any saltwater ships for this video, as I wanted to just focus on lake carriers for now. (I might do a salties compilation in the future.) If your favorite lake carrier is missing, it's mostly like because it did not visit the Duluth area in 2020 or I was unable to capture it on camera during one of my visits. For each ship, I included information on screen showing the year that the ship went into service, the overall length of the ship, and the cargo carrying capacity in tonnage. I also considered including the top speed of each ship, but realistically they all fall in the 13-16 knots range... so it seemed pointless to keep repeating the same stats over and over again.I kept each clip for each ship around 1-2 minutes in length, just to keep the overall length of this video somewhat manageable. Despite that, the full video is still 79 minutes long. I realize not everyone will be willing to sit through the entire video. Therefore, if you wish to seek out your favorite ship(s), below are the time stamps for each vessel, along with a link to the original (and longer) video for each ship. Click on the original video link if you wish to know the date and location of each clip. The original video descriptions also contain information about the loads that were being hauled.0:00 Algoma Guardian https://youtu.be/Did0yuj5HhM1:35 James R. A 1992 trip across the Great Lakes with a near disaster aboard the J L Mauthe it is Trip 29

A lot of viewers have seen the short video of the near collision on Lake Erie while I was aboard the J.L. MAUTHE back in 1992. Many have asked to see the WHOLE video and have asked about what was said between the two boats. This video is the trip as a whole and includes the un-edited radio conversation between the captain of the MUTHE and the CASON J. CALLAWAY after our close call. They conversation, I warn you, is NOT what many would expect. You'll also witness some life aboard the boat and see her hull as it flexed in 54 mile per hour wind gusts on Lake Huron. You see grain unloading and loading as well as the general stuff aboard the boat. The only down side is that we did the Soo locks both ways at night and the Detroit River downbound at night.I've done my best to remove all of the F-bombs from the soundtrack but there are a few minor saucy words to be heard..This is a LONG video folks, so have your popcorn ready.Later I will be breaking this into smaller "chapters" for better YouTube enjoyment. Meanwhile- here is the whole shooting match.Keep in mind that this was videoed with a top end Sony Handycam of the time, but it IS pre-digital and shot before steady-cam was in wide use, so the quality is not even close to today's HD.

STORM FORCE @ CAPE HORN [Ep. 108]

10 Views · 1 year ago

This is it! These are the conditions we sought to test us. We encounter FORCE 10 48+ knot wind gusts and heavy seas as we sail around Cape Horn to starboard. This is scary sailing, on the edge, and it is not for the faint of heart. You may get seasick. Don't try this at home!#sailing #adventure #epic This is the sailing we know you wanted to see when you subscribed. You wanted to see if we were tough enough. You wanted to see if we could make it. You wanted to see a great adventure and sailing in extreme conditions. We went looking for these conditions as we felt that choosing a calm weather window to round Cape Horn would be, well, disappointing, not to you, but to us. It would not be the challenge we were looking for. We wanted to summit the Mt. Everest. Somehow, climbing that mountain on a sunny warm day with no wind and waves felt like selling ourselves short. We wanted huge waves. We wanted gale force winds. We wanted freezing cold temps. Some may say seeking out these conditions is unsafe, or risky. Those people are not 100% wrong, but we say those people are living in fear. Don't be afraid! To experience true freedom is to live life without fear. That being said, do not go sailing in these conditions without being well prepared and able to self rescue, do not put your life, your sailboat, and the lives of sea rescue personnel are at risk. We are both very experienced sailors and have sailed countless miles in harsh conditions while racing, solo sailing, and doublehanded sailing to prepare for this type of sailing. Now enjoy a sailing video that we had lots of fun making.
