Taking up half the continent of South America, Brazil is host to vast array of landscapes and biomes - from the steamy Amazon Rainforests, to the savannah of the Planalto Central, and the lush Atlantic Forests. 🇧🇷One of the largest countries in the world in terms of land area and population, it is a unique blend of cultures from Europe, Africa and the native land itself. The history of Brazil is one of colonial exploitation and slavery, that, despite the efforts of enlightened leaders such as Dom Pedro II under the Empire of Brazil, today sees corruption and social inequality hold back what would otherwise already be a major global power. 🇧🇷Despite its colonial past Brazil worked hard to enter the modern age in the 20th Century under presidents such as Getulio Vargas, and a new capital at Brasilia began in 1960s after a massive modernistic building program under the architect Oscar Niemeyer. The economy continued to expand despite political repression under the dictatorship of the 1970s and 1980s, with companies such as Embraer joining an elite club of international aerospace companies developing large aircraft. Brazilian politics has never been quiet and the current president of Jair Bolsonaro continues to divide opinion both at home and abroad. 🇧🇷A global giant in agriculture, it has become self-sufficient in terms of energy needs, and its manufacturing size is now only second to the USA in the Americas. Rio de Janeiro is one of the most iconic and famous of all world cities, while giant São Paulo beats even New York in size to be the largest city in the Americas. Indeed Brazil's population is truly massive, over 200 million call themselves Brazilian, and live in diverse cities across all of the States of Brazil, from Curitiba in the South, Belo Horizonte in the centre of Minas Gerais, to Salvador Bahia and Recife in the North-East, and lastly, unique Manaus in the heart of the Amazon. 🇧🇷This is the country that brought Samba, Carnival and Bossa Nova to the world and we look at the development and history of this globally influential rhythms. But São Paulo, the largest metropolis in the southern hemisphere, is the true economic engine of the world’s sixth most-populous country.In 1554, Catholic missionaries - with the help of indigenous workers - built a small village perched 750 meters above sea level and 70 kilometers from the Atlantic coast. It was the only inland settlement in the country, a jumping off point for expeditions of conquerors, traders, and gold hunters.In the 1800’s, Brazil became the world’s leading coffee producer, but the farmers in Rio over-cultivated their soil, giving São Paulo an opening to become the country’s agricultural hub. As part of futbol-crazed Brazil, it proudly hosted matches during the 2014 World Cup; and is making significant investments in the next generation, with 850,000 students enrolled in higher education courses.Unfortunately though, São Paulo’s rapid development has also taken a heavy toll, with four core problems rising above the rest.The city’s only major bodies of water are the Tiete and Pinheiros rivers. As the population grew, the government - plagued by inefficiency and corruption - struggled to meet demand for basic infrastructure. Without enough wastewater treatment plants, sewage from millions of people flowed directly into the rivers. Toxic waste from industrial facilities was dumped without limit. When new highways were built, the city laid them on the only continuous stretches of land left, the riverbanks, and then hid stretches of them behind walls. But even if you can’t always see the rivers, their stench doesn’t go away.When the Tiete is at it most-choked, it is a biologically deadzone as far as Barra Bonita, 260 km downstream.It wasn’t always this way. Finally, the time has come. In this Brazilian street food tour in Rio de Janeiro, we’ll go to eat some of the best street food snacks and dishes, some hole in the wall style Brazilian food restaurants, and also visit some of the most unbelievable and gorgeous sights and attractions in Rio de Janeiro. It’s one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever visited.Here’s the Brazilian food and things we did:Mineiro, Sausage Sandwich - 5 BRL ($1.26) - For Brazilian breakfast we headed to Mineiro for his neighborhood grilled sausage sandwich, topped with his house made aioli dressing, cheese, and lettuce, and his own home-made chili sauce. He’s not only an amazing guy, but his sausage sandwich is outstanding. When you’re in Rio de Janeiro, you don’t want to miss it. Located just outside Siqueira Campos MRT Metro station (Map: https://goo.gl/maps/EXRj3LPihezUd5EKA), sets up in the morning about 7 am.Trem do Corcovado - 65 BRL ($16.44) - Christ the Redeemer - I pre-bought tickets online for the tram, so when we arrived we just picked up and printed the tickets. The tram took about 20 minutes and Christ The Redeemer at the top was breathtaking.Selaron Steps - Another attraction in Rio de Janeiro that I wasn’t going to miss was the Selaron Steps, created by Chilean artist Selaron. They are so cool and so iconic.Lunch at Bar Rex - For some seriously meaty Brazilian food, Bar Rex is the spot. They serve an major selection of drinks, but they also specialize in food like roasted chicken, sausages, and the oxtail. The food was outstanding, and the owners are just so cool. Finally, another iconic Brazilian drink is the caipirinha (15 BRL ($3.79) made on the beach.Copacabana Beach - Next up on this Brazilian street food and attractions tour we stopped at the famous Copacabana Beach and had a coconut (6.50 BRL ($1.64) and continued on the Red Beach in Urca to get a good view of Sugarloaf Mountain (Pão de Açúcar).Bar Urca - Also in Urca, you’ll find Bar Urca, an old food and bar establishment that’s famous for serving empada de camarão (6.50 BRL ($1.64), shrimp filled pastries. Many people order and then sit on the edge of the water in the evening.
