Here are some of my favorite Florida alligator videos taken from my trail cameras, Canon cameras using long wildlife lenses, and some still photos also thrown into the mix. I love watching and videoing these prehistoric beasts. I am using Browning Trail Cameras set up for FULL1080 HD VIDEO. The clarity and sound are truly amazing on these trail cams. I also have mixed in some video taken using my Canon 600mm lens so that I was keeping a safe distance as I watched them frolic and feed.

This particular alligator that's on the thumb nail actually is a huge bull gator. I have several amazing photo's at the end of this video. He is known as "Humpback" the alligator, he resides in a protected park in Lakeland Florida, the park is called the Circle B Bar Reserve. He is a super star when it comes to Florida alligators. Everyone wants to see him cross the road come out of the swamp, and take a picture or video of him doing something crazy. Like eating another alligator.

I set up trail cameras over looking alligator ponds and holes. I wait until gator mating season gets going and the action picks up intensely. Most alligator mating takes place in May and June, with nesting in late June and July. Females lay an average of 32 to 46 eggs which hatch in late summer or early fall.

April is the final month of Florida’s dry season and the beginning of the alligators’ annual courtship. Rising temperatures wake up the reptiles’ metabolisms and they become more energetic and travel further in search of food and mates.

FWC also warns residents and visitors to never feed an alligator. It's not only dangerous, it's illegal. Feeding them can lead the animals to overcome their natural wariness of people and teach them to associate people with food.

Female alligators rarely exceed 10 feet in length, but males can grow much larger. The Florida state record for length is a 14 foot 3-1/2 inch male from Lake Washington in Brevard County. The Florida record for weight is a 1,043 pound (13 feet 10-1/2 inches long) male from Orange Lake in Alachua County.

Alligators are ectothermic -- they rely on external sources of heat to regulate their body temperature. Alligators control their body temperature by basking in the sun, or moving to areas with warmer or cooler air or water temperatures. Alligators are most active when temperatures are between 82° to 92° F (28° to 33° C). They stop feeding when the ambient temperature drops below approximately 70° F (21° C) and they become dormant below 55° F (13° C). Alligators are dormant throughout much of the winter season. During this time, they can be found in burrows (or "dens") that they construct adjacent to an alligator hole or open water, but they occasionally emerge to bask in the sun during spells of warm weather.

American alligators produce loud, very low-pitched vocalizations called “bellows”. These rumbling roars communicate the animal’s body size to other alligators. Alligators can use this information to avoid unpromising contests for mates and breeding areas.

And male alligators, being bigger than other alligators can have decisive benefits. Females only accept males larger than themselves as mates and larger alligators are much more likely to win territorial fights. However, direct physical confrontations can lead to lethal injuries. That’s why it’s advantageous if fights can be avoided by alligators reliably signaling their body size to potential mates and rivals early on.

That’s where bellowing comes in. A research team of cognitive biologists at the University of Vienna identified cues to body size in the alligators’ bellows.

A male American alligator bellowing. Sub-audible vibrations produce the “water dance” above the animal’s back. American alligators bellow year-round, but most frequently during mating season. Bellowing differs between the sexes. Only male alligators produce a water dance, visible due to water droplets sprinkling over their backs, preceding the audible bellow.
