Spain 1936-9. In 1936, at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, the nun Maria is forced to flee her convent. She takes refuge in a brothel, until it is liberated by a women's anarchist group, part of the FAI (Federación Anarquista Ibérica), fighting the nationalists. Maria (Ariadna Gil) is recruited by Pilar (Ana Belén), a militant feminist, into the anarchist militia. Guided by the older woman, Maria is exposed to the realities of war and revolution, and comes to question her former, sheltered life. George Orwell lauded the achievements based on his personal experience there 1936-7 in "Homage to Catalonia", before the need for funds and armaments drove the Republic into the hands of the USSR.Featuring Laura Mana, Loles Leon, Victoria Abril and Blanca Apilanez.Buenaventura Durruti: "Fascism must be stamped out forever.
