A life just as it was 300 years ago: the Amish in the US. They live according to their own rules, reject technological advances, wear old-fashioned clothing and drive horse-drawn carts. An encounter with the Amish is like traveling back in time.Originating from southern Germany and Switzerland, the Amish community brought its culture and language to the New World. Deeply rooted in their faith, the Amish adhere to strict codes and reject modern technology. For outsiders, these rules can sometimes appear strange. They traverse their rural communities in horse-drawn carts, but if a distance is too far, they’re allowed to use a shuttle service. They don’t use telephones unless it’s for business purposes and the device is located outside of the home.Children are expected to help with housework even when they’re attending school. But before they’re baptized as young adults and finally become part of the Amish community, they’re allowed to try what’s called the rumspringa: a period of time when they’re encouraged to behave like regular teenagers - before deciding on which lifestyle they prefer. But those who opt for a conventional, modern existence are exiled. In Auschwitz, gynecologist Carl Clauberg attempted to sterilize hundreds of girls and women. Many died. Some of the last survivors relate their terrible experiences at the death camp.Almost 80 years ago, Kiel gynecologist Carl Clauberg was given permission by SS-Reichsführer Heinrich Himmler to sterilize hundreds of girls and women in Block 10 at the Auschwitz concentration camp. Clauberg had previously worked with the chemical company Schering-Kahlbaum AG to develop hormone drugs and contrast agents for use in his experiments. "We were called up with our numbers, then Clauberg appeared and injected something into our vaginas. And then they sometimes said: ‘No more children’,” remembers Auschwitz survivor Leny Adelaar.Carl Clauberg was a leading light in world of reproductive medicine at the time; an ambitious, driven doctor who volunteered his services to the Nazis as a way to further his career. His research paved the way for the invention of the birth control pill. His work on birth control and infertility is still part of the medical canon to this day - but all too often, a veil is drawn over his experiments at Auschwitz. This documentary records the experiences of the last survivors of those terrible experiences. The women talk about their lives before and after the death camp, about their suffering, their loss and how they managed to carry on living after liberation. Frida Kahlo is one of the most popular and recognisable artists of the 20th century.She is known for her painting, her politics, her tempestuous relationship with fellow artist Diego Rivera, and many others, and her fierce independence.But behind the vibrancy and energy of her work was a life wracked with pain, both physical and emotional, from a near fatal accident at the age of 18. She had over 30 surgeries over the course of her life to try to relieve her pain but ended up by having her leg amputated. Vincent van Gogh is almost as well known for cutting off his ear as he is for his paintings and has long been thought of as the classic tormented genius – ahead of his time, misunderstood and hounded by lesser mortals who failed to recognize his talent.

But how much do we really know about van Gogh – his unsettled early years, his failed attempts to become a preacher, his disastrous love life, and his tortured but frenetically productive final period?

In this biographical documentary I explore the life, and death, of one of the world’s greatest artists to uncover van Gogh the man, as well as van Gogh the madman.

Van Gogh: The Life, by Steven Naifeh and Gregory Smith, is justly recognised as one of the best, although their theories about his death remain controversial. While medical advances enabled an unprecedented number of Americans to live longer and healthier lives, the documentary examined how this new longevity also had unintended consequences.For millions of Americans, living longer also came to mean serious chronic illness and a protracted physical decline that could require an immense amount of care, often for years and sometimes even decades. Yet as the need for care started rising, the number of available caregivers dwindled. With families more dispersed and an overburdened healthcare system, many experts feared the country was on the threshold of a major crisis in care.“Living Old” was a FRONTLINE co-production with Mead Street Films.
